Can someone help me with free Antivirus software protection for windows vista? Is there any software for removing viruses also? My computer is running fine, but then, there is a pop up comes every few seconds with a devil sound saying my computer is infected, and asking me to buy the software. Could someone help me
Here's trusted, free anti-virus programs (only use 1 at a time):
? avast! Free Antivirus
? Avira AntiVir
? Microsoft Security Essentials
? AVG AntiVirus
? PC Tools AntiVirus
Always keep it updated. There should be a setting in it to auto-update daily.
Check the recent PC World review of free anti-viruses:
But what you have is not a virus. Think about it: why would a virus announce itself & try to get you to buy something to remove itself?
You have some other kind of malware / spyware / adware / rogue / fake. Anti-virus won't remove it. You need an anti-spyware program to remove it.
Here's trusted, free anti-spyware programs (use at least two):
? Ad-Aware
? Spybot Search & Destroy
? Windows Defender ?─ if you have Vista or Windows 7, you already have this one
? SuperAntiSpyware
? Malwarebytes
? a-squared
Always update before running a scan.
Since you didn't mention the name of the critter that it's trying to get you to buy, we can't give you specific advice on removing it, just general advice. Some of these things are extremely hard to removefree antivirus protection & require specific tools & procedures. If you are still having problems after the above steps, look for a removal guide at:

Glad to help. Thanks for choosing.
One more tip: stay away from that Malware Defense that someone posted. It's a fraud program, involving trojans:
Avira Antivirus below is rated equal to or slightly less then most of the commercially available other AVs by most professional AV rating companies. It works fine for most users. Give it a try. Though it sounds like you might be infected in which case it may try to fight you getting it installed.
For some reason, you have no av program ? And now you have an issue ? First thing for you to do is to rid yourself of the malware you picked up. use free of this,
Update it, then do a quick scan.. If you still have issues,, go into safe mode and run another scan. When done, remove all detected,
Now, you need to install an av program or use sandboxie .. Or learn to surf safely,, Avast home edition 5.0 is free and works real well, as well as Microsoft Security Essentials. ~
Edit : The thumbs down clown has arrived,, these kids need to find something else to do..
I HIGHLY reccommend AVAST Anti Virus/malware
I have use it for over 8 years and NOTHING has ever gotten past it
It's not a "memory hog" and doesn't slow down your system
BTW, they jufree antivirus protectionst celebrated their 100 MILLIONth user!
The absolute best free antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials. Its better than most (if not all) paid programs and comes from the reliable Microsoft, who made Windows Vista. Download it here:
Yes. AVG Anti Virus.
Would you drive a car without liability and comprehensive automobile insurance?
Would you own a home without fire and casualty insurance?
Then why do you run a computer without a real antivirus product instead of looking for a free product? Get yourself a commercial version of Sophos or Symantec Antivirus and you won't have to worry about these problems. The $40 annual fee is well worth eliminating the frustration you now experience.
Instead of commenting under your breath about me being a jerk, I'm the one who has been virus free for more than 15 years because I use a real antivirus program. You get what you pay for. How many corporations run free antivirus software?
www.Lavasoft.com offers Ad-Aware on a free trial. AVG i believe also offers a free trial software.
There's no good "free" Anti-viruses. Even if you downloaded a "free" Anti-virus, you will get mal-ware usually which is bad. I highly recommend you buy a Anti-virus like Webroot.
Malware defense is awesome! If your computer has a virus. I don't know, my computer always has viruses...
