What is the best antivirus software for Microsoft Windows XP?
NOD32 is the best. Plus, it's only $59.99.
Norton conflicts with things and is a memory hog. We've used it for several years, based on a radio tech guy's recommendation.
If you ask me, I think all the anti-virus software for Windows seems to weight down the system and take up extra resources. I'm just glad I own a Macbook Pro. However, I have heard some good things about Kaspersky. Personally, I use Virus Barrier X5 for OS X Leopard just for a peace of mind. Still, I rarely encounter any viruses for Mac. It does protect people I send files to though: the likes of which might infect my PC friends. Virus Barrier X5 runs in the background, and you never notice it. All those Windows anti-virus programs seem to go off all the time about something, not to mention taking up too many resources.
The best one on the market is Symantec Antivirus: Corporate Edition (not to be mistaken for Norton Antivirus). It's light-weight, bbest antivirus software xpoasts the largest catalog of viruses out there, and has auto-detect, so you won't have to run anything after an initial scan.
The only problem is obtaining it. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, check out isoHunt to The Pirate Bay and look for a torrent with good reviews.
If you do have a problem, AVG is also a good alternative. It's free, but it can't touch Symantec.
Stay far away from Mcafee, Norton, Avast, and Avg. Avast and AVG used to be good Av's but recently they've decintegrated. Norton and Mcafee have always been garbage resource hoggers.
Avira is by far the best in the free antivirus market. Maximum PC recently did a review comparing 8 Av's and free Avira came out on top with the highest detection rating.
NOD32 and Kaspersky are also very good antivirus if you want to pay. They are both excellent.
I run a computer repair shop, and I've found PC Tools Antivirus is the best. They update virus defs daily, it's free, unless you choose to paybest antivirus software xp, don't eat up your computer's processor / resources, and finds most things that the big name-pay before anything-antivirus people find (Snorton, McLaugh-ee, etc.)
McAfee Internet Security 2009
Avast! Antivirus 4
AVG Internet Security 2009
Norton Antivirus 360 (If they still have it)
Do NOT GET BITDEFENDER!!!!!!!!!!!! It slows your machine down and always turns it's self off.
hope this helps.
Free - AVG or Avast
Paid - Norton
I recommend Norton despite their bad reputation in the past. The newer Norton products are a big improvement, and the best AV software to date.
avira personal edition- free
paid- kaspersky
truthfully, AVG has a bad reputation here
