click on the down arrow which displays search engine menu, the last option is manage search engines, click on it, you can remove search engines from there , also uncheck the show search sufirefox 2 pluginsggestions box if you have a slow internet connection

internet options under tools in browsers window and undfirefox 2 pluginser advanced in internet options go where it says enable third party extensions. uncheck if it was checked. then apply and ok. close browser and reopen in new window.. check if that worked.firefox 2 plugins
